With the 2017 NFL Draft just under two weeks away, new mock drafts are coming out just about every day. Let’s take a look at some of the expert’s picks.
Will Brinson of CBS Sports, ESPN’s Todd McShay, and NFL.com’s Charley Casserly have the Jets grabbing safety Jamal Adams out of LSU at 6.
Adams would have an immediate impact on the Jets secondary with his incredible ball and coverage skills, not to mention his tenacity and leadership. Calvin Pryor is more comfortable playing closer to the line of scrimmage and the uncertainty surrounding Marcus Gilchrist could make Adams a Week 1 starter.
Mel Kiper Jr. of ESPN has North Carolina quarterback Mitchell Trubisky landing with Gang Green while NFL.com’s Chad Reuter and Bucky Brooks have the Jets drafting Clemson quarterback Deshaun Watson.
Mitchell Trubisky or Deshaun Watson would be a major gamble at 6 for the Jets. Trubisky was the starter for one year at North Carolina, and Watson for three at Clemson. Both Trubisky and Watson are very mobile and comfortable moving in the pocket, while having solid arms and aren’t afraid to let it rip in a big spot or into a tight window. There are concerns about accuracy and consistency that make many nervous about these quarterback prospects.
Daniel Jeremiah has Alabama tight end O.J. Howard going to the Green and White. O.J. Howard is one of, if not the best, pass catcher in this draft. He played four years at Alabama and in a limited role and he excelled when given opportunities. He has turned heads in pre-draft workouts with his athleticism and route running. The main thing he needs to work on is his strength in order be an efficient blocker in the run game. Howard would give the Jets something they haven’t had in a long time – an elite pass catching tight end.
Bill Barnwell of ESPN did an ‘all trade mock draft’ that could happen in the draft. In a possible attempt to get Adams, the Jets traded with Chicago Bears which gave them the 3rd pick, while giving up DE Sheldon Richardson, the 6th overall pick, and their 3rd round pick (107 overall).
Another (unlikely) scenario is the Jets dealing WR Eric Decker, the 6th overall pick, and their 5th round pick (150 overall) to the Tennessee Titans for the 5th overall pick and their 6th round pick (214 overall).
The last possible trade scenario Barnwell lays out is trading with the Oakland Raiders to get back into the first round. The Jets would give up their 2nd round (39th overall) and 3rd round (70th overall) picks to get the Raiders 1st round (24th overall) and 6th round (208 overall) picks. To draft…Texas Tech QB Patrick Mahomes. Could you image the fan and media reactions to that move?
Stay tuned Jets fans, this will be another wild and wacky draft for Gang Green.
