With the holiday season quickly approaching it is important to not forget those that are less fortunate. Recently “Let’s Talk Jets” radio interviewed Julienne Cherry, Director of Agency Relation for the Community FoodBank of NJ to discuss ways to help out.
Can you tell us about the FoodBank and how it helps the community?
The Community FoodBank of New Jersey distributes 44 million pounds of food a year to more than 1,000 nonprofit programs, as well as more than 400 programs served by our Partner Distribution Organizations (PDOs). More than 4.7 million times a year, someone in need is fed by the Community FoodBank of New Jersey’s network of partner charities.
During the holiday season, what are some of the biggest challenges for food banks?
I often receive an increased amount of calls during the holiday season to feed hungry New Jerseyans. One of the biggest challenges is trying to meet everyone’s food request needs.
What are the best ways to help support the FoodBank, either as a volunteer or with donations?
Donate, Donate and Donate. Donate your time and volunteer here or at a partner charity of ours. Give a tax-deductible donation, which we are able to leverage due to our buying power. Food donations are always welcome here at the FoodBank; donate a turkey at one of our Turkey Drive sites the weekend before Thanksgiving or create a food drive and donate our most-needed staple items.
